Records show that cricket has been played in Bromyard since at least the turn of the 20th Century, but the existing Bromyard Cricket Club did not start until the 1930s. After the Second World War, Bromyard Cricket Club was reformed and played on the Grammar School ground at Broadbridge until 1954. Due to the fact that the Club was not allowed to make any improvement to the playing area they then decided to look for a ground of their own.
In 1954 the Club bought two damson orchards at Flaggoners Green for approximately £400, which is now the present ground. During the period from 1954-58 all of the club's games were played away. Meanwhile with the help of a bulldozer and a lot of hard work from the playing members over four years, the ground was cleared, the pitch put down and the outfield seeded. In 1958 a prefab bungalow was bought for £60 and erected and renovated by Club Members. Later in 1958 the ground and Club was officially opened by Sir Archer Baldwin, MP, and a match played against a select Herefordshire XI.
In 1979-80 it was decided to improve on and enlarge the facilities further and a new Clubhouse was designed, fund raising was put in hand and in late 1980 all of the details were finalised. In January 1981 the old Clubhouse was pulled down and work on the new one began immediately. The first stage was completed in April 1981 for the forthcoming season and the Clubhouse was opened by Mike Proctor after Bromyard had played a Gloucestershire XI on 3rd September 1981.
Today Bromyard Cricket Club is one of the leading cricket clubs in Herefordshire, with a combination of pitch, practice and clubhouse facilities that is arguably the best in the county. Allied to this, the club has an excellent social side, with functions throughout the year, as well as Race Nights, summer Barbecues, and Crib, Darts and Pool teams.
Bromyard fields two XIs in the Worcestershire County League, Division 1, during the season. This is a young, competitive league, with 60 clubs from Worcestershire and the surrounding area, together with 6 of the leading clubs from Herefordshire (plus Monmouth), and is part of the Birmingham & District Premier League pyramid structure; a cricket league that is widely regarded as the strongest in the whole of England (as well as being the oldest cricket league in the world). The 3rd XI was re-formed in 2006, and gained honours in just their second season, finishing as runners-up in Marches League Division 5 in 2007. The club has played host to internationals such as Alvin Kallicharan, Vanburn Holder, Ron Headley, Mike Proctor, Sadiq Mohammad, Glenn Turner, Dipak Patel, Len Coldwell, Norman Gifford, Dennis Amiss, Andy Lloyd and Chris Broad in benefit matches held over the past 40 years.
Bromyard itself is a friendly, picturesque market town of some 4,000 or so people, situated 15 miles west of Worcester, and 15 miles north-east of Hereford. It is famous for its summer folk music festival and its arts and crafts, and as well as a dozen or so pubs also has excellent Rugby, Football and Tennis facilities; like the cricket club, located around the town's outskirts. The Rugby club play in Midlands West (South-West) 6 and the Football club in the West Midlands Premier League, and as well as the thriving sporting side, Bromyard is an excellent place for a pub lunch or a quiet pint.
This website provides an introduction to the Cricket Club, its facilities, social events and players. Any new players or supporters are always welcome up at the club. As well as 22 league games for the 1sts and 2nds, and 16 for the 3rds, the club also play in the Catley Staite Herefordshire Sunday League Division 1, with seven 40 over matches spread out every 3 weeks over the summer, and also play 2 'friendly', 40 over games. In 2004 Bromyard fielded Under 11 and Under 13 sides in the Herefordshire Junior Leagues for the first time, and in 2008 an Under 15 side was added. Bromyard regularly hosts Herefordshire Junior County matches and Over 50s games too.
The club itself started playing league cricket in the late 1970s, first in the Hereford Times League, then in 1992 the Marches League, before joining the Worcestershire County League (Division 2), upon its inception in 1999. The club won its first 1st XI championship in 2000, with the 1st XI winning WCL Division 2, and this success was repeated in 2005 when the 1st XI won promotion back to Division 1 of the Worcestershire League at the first attempt. So come along to Flaggoners Green and support one of Herefordshire's best, friendliest cricket clubs!
